“I’m on social media all day long, it’s awesome.”

Katie Cracchiolo, a University of Oregon alum, currently works alongside the Golden State Warriors managing all of their social media outlets. As a 2014 graduate, she spent her time at UO working at the Emerald, and getting her first job with the Sacramento Kings right out of college. In terms of applying for a job after college, especially when seeking to work in social media management, Katie put a great emphasis on the importance of managing your own social media accounts: “When you are applying for this kind of job, all of your social channels are put under a microscope.”

During an average day of Katie’s job, she will work with the marketing team and the PR team to keep the information going into the social media channels running smoothly. She gave 4 tips specific to a social media career for an athletic organization:

  1.   Listen to what your fans are saying – their input is very important to your content.
  2.   Respond to fans and other teams – making those personal connections add value.
  3.   Know your athletes – Know who they are and how they represent themselves on social media.
  4.   Know your PR team – Know how they want you to represent the brand on social media.

If you are interested in getting a career similar to Katie’s, she recommends:

  • Create an account with Teamwork Online, a network that provides information on job opportunities in the industry.
  • Follow your favorite teams and brands on social media, including LinkedIn.
  • Begin to curate YOUR brand, and on a regular basis.
  • Be patient and persistent when applying for jobs. (Katie got her job after 6 months and 200 job applications!)

Katie Cracchiolo provided us with a great perspective on a social media career for an athletic organization. Thanks, Katie!
